Peterborough CAMRA 40th Beer Festival 2017

Once again it’s time for my local Peterborough CAMRA beer festival, now in it’s 40th year!  I’ve been going on and off since I was 17, and have seen it grow into a huge outdoors festival of beer.  It’s run by the local CAMRA team, and can be a little traditional for my liking – although last year they did introduce a Keykeg bar selling some interesting craft beers.  I’ve always been a big supporter of the event, but I feel they could take a look at the offering outside of beer – the food has been very...

Helping get a beer book published; Miracle Brew by Pete Brown

A year or two ago I saw a tweet by Pete Brown (no relation), one of the UK’s most entertaining beer writers, who was publishing a book through publishing crowdfunders Unbound.  As I’ve already read a couple of his books (a beer history book, and a great one about taking an IPA from the UK to India via a shipping route), I thought I could find some cash to help get the book finished.  “Miracle Brew” is the end result, a book about the main ingredients that makes up our favourite booze.  My exclusive hardbound copy has...

Mango IPA – Home Brew with Mango Puree

After my last beer experiment, trying to make a grapegruit IPA with grapefruit extract, I thought my next beer should be something far more tropical, as I do love the huge fruity IPA’s like the stunning Cloudwater DIPA series of beers. The grapefruit extract beer didn’t quite come out how I wanted, possibly just too high a dosage, or it just makes for a slightly chemical taste.  It wasn’t a bad beer, just wasn’t quite right.  Possibly needed a lot more hops to balance the grapefruit flavour. So after speaking to my...

New Brew, Grapefruit Citrus IPA

I drink a lot of Cloudwater beers, especially now the Stoneworks bar in Peterborough has opened and providing us with many of the Cloudwater DIPA v6/7/8/9/10 treats, plus lots of great keg and bottles from them.  I like the way Cloudwater are quite honest with ingredients on their bottles, showing that they not only use a lot of hops, but that they a) use hop extracts for bitterness and dry hopping, but that they also use sugars to help get to the high end abv without the beers being too malty and thick bodied. I’ve used Belgium candy...

Huge 22 Tap Thornbridge Take-over at the Stoneworks Bar, Peterborough

My only local craft beer bar here in Peterborough, The Stoneworks, with it’s impressive 22 tap stone bar is putting on another ‘event’ night to follow previous tap-takeovers and social nights this year.   On Thursday 22nd Dec it is hosting the fantastic ‘cross over’ brewery Thornbridge, who are bringing enough key-keg and keg beers to take over all 22 taps! I say ‘cross-over’, because Thornbridge is one of a handful of breweries who seem to make beer to please both the traditional CAMRA real-ale...

Krispy’s Guide to the Pboro Beer Festival

Updated for 2016:  I thought I’d write a bit of a fun guide to what it’s like to spend time at the Peterborough beer festival, either for those of you who are coming for the first time, or for those of you who may give an experienced nod to some of the points I make, or maybe even write to me in a fit of anger at my schoolboy errors! New for 2016 – Craft Keg bar! Well the local CAMRA have finally joined the revolution (a little anyway), and have introduced a “Key-Keg” bar, which will serve craft keg beers under...
